No Door Ajar warning

I got a car wash today and while driving I heard a wind noise inside. I thought it was the A/C so I turned it off. But I did it during a stop and I was driving slow so I did not hear the wind. I turned my music off before heading up and I heard that wind noise again. All of the doors were locked and the windows were closed and sunroof. I come home and I noticed my passanger rear door was slightly open. However nothing on the DIC said Door Ajar. I was driving highway speeds beyond the legal limit. I'm lucky the door did not blow open while driving.

It is normal that the "Door Ajar" light does not come on in any HHR. This was a design flaw by GM, as they used door jamb switches with plungers that are too long. Your door would not "Blow open" though, because there is a secondary latch that prevents this. If the door is open past the secondary latch, the "Door Ajar" prompt will appear.

Hope it helps,

More little notes to put away in the memory banks. Thanks Mike...and SIHHR for bringing it to our attention.

Yup that's true. Door gotta be open a fair way before the warning message appears.

It would be interesting to know from our 2007 owners if that is still the case?

Yep, Mikes correct. I think the door ajar should have been termed "door open"...LOL

Wow good info. I kinda thought the warning just never worked cause I have noticed the door "ajar" but not "open" now I know.

Here's a test:

Drive down the street about 40mph and open your door up all the way.

The "Door Ajar" light should now come on.

(what were they thinking?)

Maybe that no one would really notice and if they did test it like you suggest, no one would hear about it. They'd be dead or so ridiculed they would wither in a corner.

It is sooooooo stupid though. Door ajar does not mean open and open it must be to show ajar. Another special feature of our beloved HHRs!
