My temp gauge will be working fine (185+-) then drop to zero, CEL will come on a few seconds later, the AC will shut down. I can pull/replace the fuse on the battery and all will be fine for 30 min to an hr. Also my code reader plug-in will not let any reader get codes ??? Help

First thing. If you can't pull the CEL codes, check the fuse for the one to the diagnostic plug in. (#56 fuse under hood ?) If it's blown you will not be able to retrieve any code info.
Also if you are pulling the main fuse on the battery, this will clear the codes and there will be none to read.
The AC will shut down if the ECM senses a cooling problem. This is a normal failsafe operation.
Hard to diagnosis the cooling problem over the internet. Best to try to get the codes first. Doesn't sound like a thermostat issue. More like a wiring connection and/or ECM problem.

On my 08 LT, the front power outlet / cig lighter is connected to the OBD 2 port & is (under hood) fuse # 29.. Maybe SS is different ?

I just went thru same dealio w/ "No Link" to vehicle. It was the fuse.

Not exactly aware of how your code reader works BUT, if it is not a CANN-OBD II reader it will not work on the HHR, IIRC.

I'm going with Whopper on this. I think you have the beginning of a failing thermostat.

 

I have the a/c off and both gauges reading nothing with the p0128 code for the 3rd time since august.....the local dealer is being a pain and would have charged me $115 because "a pin to the fuse box from the compressor was jammed and its not covered under warrany"...... After standing for 30mins telling the guy i had no previous A/C issues he removed the charge but told me i was wrong and he was 100% sure my t-stat was ok(after it was replaced in aug.) even though he had no idea the gauges were reading ----. Well i think i want to replace it myself rather than deal with the dealer.....smh

 

The wired thing is last night i cleaned my airflow sensor(i have P0128 and P0102 for 3rd time together in a year) and just like that the t-stat started working and i have a/c and both gauges with temps back from 185-219......now i know the 2 cant be connected but it was just really intresting......

 

Maybe the entire problem was the MAF connecter never got re connected right from an air filter change? Been there, done that!
