Here's a thought, and probably is not the problem. But it can be tested fairly easily, so I'm going to throw it in here for discussion.
The large wire that connects the starter to the alternator, has what may be a fuseible link in it. It's not identified as such on the wiring diagrams, but it kinda looks like one. Anyway, that wire could be removed and tested for continuity, wiggling and flexing it. If it is a link, maybe it's conducting intermittently.

I'm back. While I had the HHR up on blocks looking for the electrical gremlins I figured I might as well change the front wheel bearings and hubs. They had 181,000 miles on them and were ready to be replaced. I found MOOG bearings and Hubs at AutoZone and decided to get them. They have a 3 year warranty, better than anything else I found. They went on pretty easy, no real problem getting the old hubs off. I love living in North Carolina and no salt or rust.
So I have the HHR back on the road now to drive it and see if and when the electrical issues reappear. I took it out this afternoon for a drive to check out the new bearings and everything was good. I am going to drive it until the symptoms come back, it could be a day, a week or months. I just wanted to let everyone know I will report back. I have the interior panels off, that cover the fuse box on the side of the transmission, and the covers off in the back so I can get to the battery quickly. I have my volt meter and OBD scan gauge in the passenger seat so I can check things when it happens. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will report back, I know how frustrating it is when a thread ends and original poster never lets anyone know what they found.

We still don't know what you mean by big ground wire on the starter. There is no ground wire on the starter. Please do not attempt to ground any wire on the starter, risk of injury or death.
The transmission is not behind the interior fuse block(BCM).
