#10-08-44-002: Popping and/or Reduced Audio on AM Radio Stations When Radio is Powered Up or Turned On (Verify Condition/Replace and Reprogram Radio Using SPS) - (Mar 26, 2010)

Subject: Popping and/or Reduced Audio on AM Radio Stations When Radio is Powered Up or Turned On (Verify Condition/Replace and Reprogram Radio Using SPS)

Models: 2007-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR

2008 Chevrolet Malibu

2007-2008 Pontiac G5, Solstice

2007-2008 Saturn AURA, SKY

Equipped with RPO US8 or US9 Only
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
Important: The popping, station interference and/or reduced audio conditions as described ONLY occur when listening to AM radio stations.

Some customers may comment on the following conditions:

• When listening to a very strong AM station (50kW or greater) and operating their vehicle within 1.6-3.2 km (1-2 mi) of the transmitting tower of that AM station, they will begin to hear a popping noise and/or experience reduced audio. The closer the distance to the tower, the greater the noise and an accompanying increase in the signal distortion.

• When listening to a moderate to strong AM station, another AM station will cause interference.

Cause
This condition may be caused by an AM frequency overload.

Correction
Verify the customer concern by operating the vehicle with the radio on an AM band within a 1.6-3.2 km (1-2 mi) distance of a strong AM radio station.
⇒ If the conditions as described above are present, remove and replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in SI.

You must call TCSC to obtain a VCI for programming the new radio.
In order to calibrate the radio properly you will need the radio RPO, speaker system RPO and indicate if the vehicle is equipped with XM (RPO U2K).

Parts Information
DO NOT OBTAIN PARTS FROM GMSPO.

#PI0100: Stability Control Inoperative Due to Different Tire Sizes or Manufacturers, Service ESC Indicator Illuminated, DTC C0460 Set - (Apr 15, 2010)

Subject: Stability Control Inoperative Due to Different Tire Sizes or Manufacturers, Service ESC Indicator Illuminated, DTC C0460 Set

Models: 2006-2010 Chevrolet HHR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern
The Service Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light is on due to DTC C0460-42 "Steering Position Signal Initialization Not Accomplished" being set. Stability control will be inoperative.

Customers may have one or more tires that are different sizes or produced by different manufacturers or have low air pressure sensors that are mounted on the vehicle. It has been determined that some tires of different brands may have rolling diameters that are either large or small enough in comparison to the other original tire(s) on the vehicle that may allow DTC C0460 to set.

Important: DO NOT replace the steering angle sensor in the vehicle without confirming the tire, size, brand and pressure.

Recommendations/Instructions
Before attempting any repairs:

• Confirm that all tires are of the proper size and that all are matching brands.

• Check and adjust all tires to the stated cold air pressure as identified on the tire placard. Low tire pressure may induce DTC C0460.

• Check and diagnose all EBCM wheel speed sensor related DTCs first (example: C0035, C0040, C0045 and C0050).

If a mis-sized or non-matching brand tire is present, inform the customer that in order for the electronic stability control system to function normally, tires need to be a uniform size and rolling diameter and match the original equipment tire sizes and specifications.

If the tires are found to be satisfactory, please refer to normal diagnostics in SI for DTC C0460.

Pie0041b

#PIE0041B: EI10006-Engineering Information-SIR/Airbag Indicator/Light On, DTC B0019 or B0020 Set (Repair Inflatable Restraint I/P Connector) - (Apr 15, 2010)

Subject: EI10006 -- Engineering Information -- SIR/Airbag Indicator/Light On, DTC B0019 or B0020 Set (Repair Inflatable Restraint I/P Connector)

Models: 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This PI is being revised to end the need for information from the field and provide repair information. Please discard PIE0041A.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
Some customers may comment on the SIR/Airbag indicator/light on in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Upon investigation, the technician may find SIR DTCs B0019.0D, B0019.04, B0020.0D, and/or B0020.04 set.

Note: This concern only involves the SIR/Airbag indicator (shown below). Do not proceed with this bulletin if only the Passenger Airbag indicator is On.

Cause
This condition may be caused by fretting corrosion on the terminals of inflatable restraint I/P harness to body harness connector X211 due to excessive vibration.

Correction
If a vehicle is encountered with the above condition, follow the steps below:

If DTCs B0019 and/or B0020 is set, the connection from the body harness to the I/P passenger inflatable restraint harness (X211) needs to be inspected. The symptom byte B0019.0D or B0020.0D set in history and the SIR/airbag indicator/light turning on intermittently are usually the first symptoms that fretting corrosion is beginning to occur on the terminals of this connector. A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred. X211 is located in the front passenger kick panel area. Refer to Harness Routing Views in SI. If DTCs B0019 and/or B0020 are not set, proceed with step 2.
• If the DTC is set in history, remove the passenger side kick panel. Locate the passenger inflatable restraint I/P harness to body harness connector X211. Turn the ignition ON. Wait for the self test to complete. The SIR/airbag indicator/light will turn off. Wiggle this connection and see if the SIR/airbag indicator/light turns on. If not, drive the vehicle over bumps and see if the SIR/airbag indicator/light turns on. This DTC typically sets when the connector experiences some vibration.

• If the airbag light turns on and the DTC is set current, turn off the ignition. Inspect the terminals for corrosion. If corrosion is found, clean the terminals with a small wire brush. Brush on a small amount of dielectric grease, GM P/N 12345579 (in Canada, use 10953481) to the female side of the terminals. Reconnect the connector. To stiffen up the connection, wrap with electrical tape in a double layer around the body harness about 50 mm (2 in) down from the connector, wrap over the connector, and about 50 mm (2 in) up the airbag pigtail. Reinstall the harness behind the trim. Clear DTCs. Test drive to ensure that the DTC does not reoccur. Check DTCs to ensure that no history DTC (B0019 or B0020) is reported by the SDM.

If any other DTC(s) are set, refer to diagnosis and repair procedures in SI.

Subject: SIR/Airbag Indicator Light On, DTC B0019 or B0020 Set

Models: 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment on the SIR/Airbag indicator/light on in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Upon investigation, the technician may find SIR DTCs B0019.0D, B0019.04, B0020.0D, and/or B0020.04 set.

Note: This concern only involves the SIR/Airbag indicator (shown below). Do not proceed with this bulletin if only the Passenger Airbag indicator is On.

This condition may be caused by fretting corrosion on the terminals of inflatable restraint I/P harness to body harness connector X211 due to excessive vibration.

Recommendation/Instruction:
If a vehicle is encountered with the above condition, follow the steps below:

If DTCs B0019 and/or B0020 is set, the connection from the body harness to the I/P passenger inflatable restraint harness (X211) needs to be inspected. The symptom byte B0019.0D or B0020.0D set in history and the SIR/airbag indicator/light turning on intermittently are usually the first symptoms that fretting corrosion is beginning to occur on the terminals of this connector.

#PI0128: Engine Misfire/Low Compression - (May 12, 2010)

Subject: Engine Misfire/Low Compression

Models: 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR

2008-2010 Pontiac Solstice

2008-2010 Saturn SKY

2008-2009 Daewoo G2X

2008-2010 Opel GT

Equipped with 2.0L Engine (VIN X - RPO LNF)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition/Concern:
Some 2.0L Turbo engines may come in with a misfire on one cylinder.

For further misfire diagnosis, a technician should perform a compression test. The results may lead to a cylinder with low compression (85-90 psi). This may be the cause the misfire. The cylinder with the low compression may have a burned/ damaged piston from detonation. The damage to the piston is usually above and below the first compression ring in an area about 25.4 mm (1 in) in length.

Recommendation/Instructions:
Damage of this type to the piston is usually caused by aftermarket equipment (examples are: air induction systems, intercooler cooling devices, NOS systems, ECM calibrations), all designed to boost the output of the engine. This increased output of the engine can lead to severe detonation in certain conditions. If diagnosed with this condition, the vehicle should be inspected for aftermarket performance equipment and/or calibrations (Refer to bulletin 08-06-04-033C for help on Identifying calibrations) and it should be noted on the repair order.

The GM Accessories power upgrade kit by itself is designed for this engine and should be the recommended performance enhancing equipment. Using the GM accessory kit with other aftermarket components could damage the engine as well.

If repairs to the engine are the result of the installation or use of a non-GM approved part, the warranty will not be honored.
