Oil Change Guidelines

I was talkign to my Dad and he commented that the most important oil change is the first one, and that it should occur around 1,500 miles. Anyone know of this and whether it is accurate?

You will hear all kinds of answers. But todays motors do not require a break in oil change.

But do as you like.

I changed mine out at 1100 miles partly due to a build date of 9/06 and I bought it in May of this year

Edit: changed at 1100 miles not 100

When in doubt read the Owners Manual!

Robbobrob, keep in mind that Exxon-Mobil supplies motor oil for GM and their dealers (unless the dealer opts to source other than Goodwrench oil), it is either Exxon Superflo or the late Mobil Drive Clean.

Just mentioning this in case you want to get as close to the factory fill oil as possible, or you could just buy Goodwrench oil @ your dealer, lol. Same thing more or less.

I used Mobil Clean 5000 for my 1000 mile oil change. Mobil Clean 5000 is an updated (better additive package) version of Mobil Drive Clean.

Changed mine at 500 miles with dino oil, then again at 3,000 miles, changing to Mobil 1 Synthetic. Since then I have followed the OLM to about 50% and check to see how dirty it is. If it looks good I let it go to 30-20% before changing, if it's dirty I change it then. I know everyone is different, and this is how I choose to change my oil. If you do it different that's cool too. It's tough to let go of the 3 months/3,000 miles interval after it has been drilled into our heads for so long. But with today's cleaner burning engines and much higher quality oil, I feel comfortable in my oil change intervals.

My first oil change was at 3000 and second at 6000 because like mizzouHHR pointed out it hard to break the 3000 mile thing. Now I just let my DIC guide me kind of like I do for the rest of the important decisions in life. I've never been one for changing the oil at ridiculously low mileage just because the engine is new and you used to have to do that back in caveman times.

According to GM's engine breaking procedures, you should only use conventional oil for your first oil change. Then you could switch to synthetic or whatever you want on your next oil change. This is not found in the owner's manual.
