oil seal?

But I was looking for the oil that was hiding.

I've never added trans fluid. This tranny was professionally rebuilt one year ago. And Don says above that if engine not running when pulled inspection port plug and nothing came out, then the trans was drastically low??? That there should be 2" of fluid above the plug if not running.

You state in post #1 you checked the engine oil dipstick and it was almost dry. Now you state, you never said that.
In post #9 you stated that you added Dextron VI , now you state you didn’t add transmission fluid.
I’m confused, take it to transmission shop and let them determine the leak, perhaps you are still under the 12 month warranty of your rebuilt transmission.

so just a thought.. have you checked your coolant levels? I thought I saw some transmission fluid leaking and found traces on bolts looking a lot like yours but it ended up being the orange dexcool coolant. If some sprayed on the exhaust it would also create a lot of white smoke but later may seem to be dry like you have described with only traces left behind. worth a look anyway!

Conclusion on this......took to the tranny shop that did rebuild a year ago, followed by another warranty service a few weeks later, during which they dropped it again and replaced what they said was a defective torque converter installed during the rebuild.
This time they said the "front seal" had worked itself loose and was backing out, causing a fluid leak. They fixed that and put it back together and did so with no charge under "customer satisfaction" even though it was beyond 12 month warranty. I thanked them but gave them $200 anyway for the trouble.
It's back on the road, hopefully for a while longer before the next issue.
Thanks to all who chimed in with helpful responses.
