There is no magic involved; oil comes from somewhere, it doesn't hide then let go.
No it was not running when I pulled the plug and nothing came out but a steady stream came out after adding about 1/2 quart. So assuming it was just below port level without running when I pulled the plug, how much more to add? another quart? At any rate, the car is leaking fresh trans fluid as it sits and this has to be corrected so I'm gonna take it to the tranny shop and let them diagnose it. I know they are going to have to drop it to get to where it is leaking. Hoping they just find a bad seal and don't try to sell me another rebuild. It's been almost exactly 12 months. Sucks. I don't have the experience or the fortitude to drop a transmission.

But I was looking for the oil that was hiding.

If the transmission was not warm and the engine running, adding transmission fluid will over fill the transmission. That could be why there’s transmission fluid being forced out.

I've never added trans fluid. This tranny was professionally rebuilt one year ago. And Don says above that if engine not running when pulled inspection port plug and nothing came out, then the trans was drastically low??? That there should be 2" of fluid above the plug if not running.

Engine oil is still full on dipstick. Theres residual goop and grime around the oil filter and below. I probably have a slow leak there. I'm not too worried about that. Secondary to the tranny.

You state in post #1 you checked the engine oil dipstick and it was almost dry. Now you state, you never said that.

In post #9 you stated that you added Dextron VI , now you state you didn’t add transmission fluid.

I’m confused, take it to transmission shop and let them determine the leak, perhaps you are still under the 12 month warranty of your rebuilt transmission.

I didn't say I never said oil was'nt low. It was but I'm saying it has remained full since I added oil and not gone down. With the transmission fluid, I was responding to the implication that the leak was a result of overfilling. I was trying to say that I've never added fluid to this sealed transmission after the rebuild, except in the last day or so after the event. Has nothing to do with the original event of the thread. Yes, tomorrow morning it is going to trans shop. We won't solve it here and I don't have the ability to work on a transmission.

so just a thought.. have you checked your coolant levels? I thought I saw some transmission fluid leaking and found traces on bolts looking a lot like yours but it ended up being the orange dexcool coolant. If some sprayed on the exhaust it would also create a lot of white smoke but later may seem to be dry like you have described with only traces left behind. worth a look anyway!

Conclusion on this......took to the tranny shop that did rebuild a year ago, followed by another warranty service a few weeks later, during which they dropped it again and replaced what they said was a defective torque converter installed during the rebuild.
This time they said the "front seal" had worked itself loose and was backing out, causing a fluid leak. They fixed that and put it back together and did so with no charge under "customer satisfaction" even though it was beyond 12 month warranty. I thanked them but gave them $200 anyway for the trouble.
It's back on the road, hopefully for a while longer before the next issue.
Thanks to all who chimed in with helpful responses.
