Lots of variables there....
I had one that just sat in the garage for about a year. When then one in my truck died, I dropped it in and it fired right up. If it's fully charged and stored correctly, it will probably be able to sit for a long time. If it's going to be in a vehicle, then disconnect it to prevent any trickle drain.

i had my red top optima in my cavalier , i traded the car in during June 08' and kept the battery and put a cheap battery in the car, ive had the battery sitting in my house (in the closet on carpet since )
