Overheating!, need advice

I don't know 100% the fan kicks on when it hit Cooling mode because i haven't seen it get that hot. But my son said the temp got to 230 but I have read it might be a little warmer for the cooling mode to start.
I don't think the coolant reservoir was empty but it was low for sure, I had about 1/2 of a gallon of Dex put about half that in and then started adding water which started over flow.

Here's a link for checking that the coolant recovery tank is at the proper level. https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/www....ad.php?t=55772

That's not double checking, that's checking. The recovery tank level fluctuates with temperature and pressure. There can be coolant in the tank, but the level of the engine and radiator can be low. There can also be air pockets. Here is the how-to for burping the cooling system. https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/www....ad.php?t=60614

That is why I have thought the fan was the issue. I will know tonight I have a new fan assembly and plan on changing it tonight.
I'm going to run a cheater 12v to the fan and see if it kicks on just to make sure it is a bad fan and not no signal going to the fan.

So ran a power lead to the fan and it turns. So fan is good. Didn't leave it long just enough to see the fan moving.
It has to be the signal to the fan which I think is my coolant temp sensor. I swapped the fan relay again to be sure that wasn't the issue.
I read some coolant temp sensors if I unplugg it forces the fan to be on. Does that work on these 2.2?
