This is the year 2020! The ECM controls the relay.

Okay took the car in to a shop for a diagnostic, and paid $80 to tell me the fan was bad. They wanted $650 to replace it so told them no thanks and did it my self in 30 mins. But that wasn't the problem. The new fan still doesn't come on and the old fan runs just fine when I run 12 volts from the batter to it, also replaced the coolant temp sensor (thinking it wasn't telling the fan to turn on) didn't make any difference.
So I spent a hour running a wire from an empty fuse in the fuse box that is live with the key on to the fan. So now the fan turns on when the car is running, problem kinda solved. My son runs the AC all the time from April to Nov so fan would be on all the time anyway, I know it might take a little longer to warm up in the winter but he is happy and can start working again.

Thanks for that info.
Rockauto has the ECM for $200 but I will let my son know. I could put the fan on a switch if he wanted to keep it from warming up too slow but all depends on what he wants to do at this point. The diag also showed cam shaft senors bad and wheel speed sensor bad, this weekend replacing those so not done with the car yet.

Who said anything about a bad ECM (that will need dealer programming)? Any other codes you forgot to mention?
FYI "bad cam shaft sensor" could mean a bad timing chain and could be the trigger for "bad wheel speed sensor". We could probably save you a lot of money and grief.

Well I assumed if the ECM isn't telling the fan to turn on it would be bad.
Thanks for the help and advice
