P0300 was hell to fix
New Member.. Hi everyone.
So bought the car recently 2.2L LT with automatic transmission , has about 115,000 miles. Started idling bad and would die often at stops. Not too noticeable at speed. Code P0300 popped up. For those who dont know.... its the WTF code... tells you jack! Random Misfire ..... So I tested everything I could think of and replaced a bunch of stuff and no fix. Low idle so not a vacuum leak. Compression is unflipping believable!!?? 215psi all cylinders?? All of the known causes checked:
Fuel system: Gas was fine, fuel pressure 60 psi and constant at all RPMs. Fuel injectors checked.. 4ohms across the board, but still swapped them just in case..
Ignition system: 14 volts fairly constant at all rpms. changed plugs, ignition control module, coil pack, grounds looked good.
I was scratching my head at this. The only other symptom was that it 'dry starts' for like 2-4 seconds at every start up..sounds like the lifters dont have any oil at start up....this 'clacky, diesel' sound is apparrently a common problem with this 2.2 ecotec engine after 100,000 miles. So i checked the timing chain...
Mild slack but not really worthy of fixing, but again I went ahead and did a timing set on it. Timing marks on the chain had faded so I dont know if the timing was correct or not. Got to the last part of the swap and BINGO!! found the problem.. timing tensioner was stuck shut. The timing chain had probably slipped at some point. Put it back together with all of the new timing parts, oil change, and the misfire was gone!! $500, blood, sweat and It is fixed.
Still getting that 'dry start' sound though...

Welcome allsmilesjp-
Chain could not have jumped much, or you would know it. By the valves going to war with the pistons. These eco-tecs are 'interference engines'....
Some members have reported that dry start sound...But mine doesn't..
