Possible cooling system leak?

Hi,

I had a sudden overheating problem in my 2010 HHR. After turning off the engine, the fan continued to run. I turned the car on to see the temp gauge nearly go to red. I turned it off, let the engine cool, opened the coolant recovery tank, and found no coolant. This happened very suddenly! Could a leak have happened suddenly? Should I try to refill the tank if there is a leak? I don't want coolant to drain on the ground.

Fill it and see what happens.

When the engine is cooled off, remove the radiator pressure cap, there should be coolant right up to the top, no air. Fill that , the the overflow reservoir, put the caps back in place.
