Power Steering fainted

Was backing out of a space and let the steering wheel freewheel a bit until I abruptly stopped it and started forward. About then I noticed the steering was heavy and 'power steering' was displayed on the dash. After my next stop, it went away like it never happened. WT?

I would guess your going to need a power steering motor in your future. They are not hard to replace there is a good how to on the site.

There are lots of threads for this problem just type power steering in the search box at the top of the page and you will get a lot of hits.

Is this how it happens? Did letting it 'freewheel' and abruptly stopping it aggravate things somehow? I figured it would quit altogether if the motor went bad.

I don't know that the freewheel thing aggravated anything. I have read statements from others that there problem started with intermittent problems.

My 07 will sometimes be stiffer at time but I have not gotten a warning message yet.

The motor seems to have overheating protection built into it, so yes, that might be what happened.

Hey there Sundance,

It is a bummer to hear that this is going on with your HHR! Were you planning on visiting your local dealer to have this checked out? I'd be happy to help you get that set up if you would like to reach out to me via PM.

Sincerely,

Jonathan A.

Thank you for intervening, but it isn't really a problem (yet). Was just a hiccup since it fixed itself. But if/when it does become a problem, I hope you don't mind if I reference your offer!
