I have never have had the check engine light come on nor any codes. The fuel pump doesn't always turn on, only when it feels like it. When it does turn on, everything seems to be fine, and runs great. We check the Fuel Pump relay and fuse every time we start it, and it seems to have no issues and tests out fine.. I'm starting to wonder if I have bad wiring. My car was a prior-salvage when I bought it with rear end damage. It's a 2007 HHR LT 2.4L

Gas smell in the engine compartment and problematic starting after cars sits for a while......... I'd say you have a leak in the fuel system someplace that prevents the fuel rail to stay pressurized.....maybe even the fuel rail itself. Seems one or two have had the problem. IIRC
And you say you istalled a new fuel pump. Would you explain???? The fuel pump is in the fuel tank. Did you drop the tank to install?

Yes we dropped the fuel tank and installed a new fuel pump and it started right after that for 3 times, while leaving it running 10 minutes each time. By the 3rd time it started to bog down and loose pressure at the rail, again. So we jacked up the rear end again, beat on the fuel tank a few times, looked things over and she started again, so we lowered the jack while it was running and after about 10 seconds it died, again. So we jacked it up again, trying the same thing over. It did not work. Then we tried some other things, then back to the jack trick and it worked for about 10-15 starts and even drove it down and around the block, was working great. And then when we called it a night and I was about to go home, it did it again..

Problem solved for now... When the old pump went out and it is out, it slightly charred the fuse, but the fuse read out just fine on all our tests. But put a new fuse in and runs perfect all the time.

About 6 months ago our Fire Dept pickup (1997 Ford 150) had some running lights go out. I looked in the fuse box under the hood. There was a fuse that had the plastic melted so bad it had "oozed" yellow plastic into a quarter sized puddle! The metal part of the fuse was still intact, sticking up, bare metal, and had not blown! Weird is all I could think.

Would have been ironic if the Fire Department vehicle had caught on fire.
