Jim, my 08 2.2L was doing this and a month ago I swapped tensioner.
Same thing as yours. So I bought a New (used) engine and had that installed.
Old engine is junk. Good core.
Not saying your is but sounds the same. You bent your valves. Was cheaper to just swap engines with a low miler.

With VVT note the Black exhaust solenoid and the grey intake solenoid
