I find snake skins all around my property. Never found any in the attic though. I did find one in my workshop once. But that building is detached and about 50 ft from the house.
Rat snakes and black racers are the bigger ones. Our tomcat brings us ringnecks, green snakes and glass snakes. And the occasional legless lizard. (Had to Google those cuz they sure look like snakes.)
Far too few snakes here. The rattlers tend to stay up in the hills, which is just as well, because it's scary af when you hear one as you're moseying along...
You guys actually have it better than newer car owners. Ford, in particular, started to use biodegradable sound deadening. It's corn husks and soybean byproducts. The rodent problem is going to get worse. Some of that stuff is food for them, the rest is no problem to chew up. I think all OEMs have this issue now. Nice cats in this thread, though. I miss mine.
I poison the chipmunks and squirrels here, so even parking outside hasn't (yet) been a problem.
Well as you have already figured out a rat can get very costly. You need to kill the rat!!! I just so happen to be pretty good at this. I recommend the black plastic traps that orkiin uses. Then you got to figure out what bait to use. I have heard that different parts of the coutry that the rats have different preferences. You might call a local exterminator and ask whaat bait he finds the most effective. Here in North Tecas it is peanut butter and stir in a little chocolate syrup. Before you set your trap, put on your latex gloves and wash the trap thoroughly with dishwashing liquid. Make absolute certain that you do not contaminate the trap with human scent. Set the trap against a wall, rats do not like to run across the middle of the floor, they like to hug the wall. Make sure it is in a place where the pet can not access it and wait. When you catch the rat, PUT YOUR GLOVES on. Do not contaminate the trap with human scent. Dispose of dead rat. Trap covered in blood, no problem, just add fresh bait and reset. Yes, rats are actually attracted to rat blood. I have also had success with that stinky goat cheese. The wooden victor traps are good too, but I prefer the black plastic ones now. If you use the wooden victor RAT trap, I have always had to get a pair of needle nose pliers and adjust the trip mechanism to be hair trigger. I set it with a long screwdriver. f I use the goat cheese on this, I would nuke the cheese a little to make it warm and pliable, then force it into the metal trip plate, as it cools it becomes one with the metal trip plate.
