to the forum radcon!
I've moved your thread out into the "Problems/Service/Repairs" section so that it didn't get overlooked.
An air bag light and message are indicative of a fault found in the system during the vehicle's self check, a fault code has been stored, and the light/message triggered.
Since the SRS system is something that should only be touched by qualified techs with the proper diagnostic tools, I'd advise you to take your HHR to your dealer and have them check things out for you.
It may be something as simple as a loose connection.

Airbag light
My airbag lite also came on at about 38k
i took it to the dealer and all he did was unplug it under the passenger seat and replug it and no more problem ( free of charge)
i think the plug acts up if the seat is moved back and forth to much or to hard
do it yourself because the first stealership i took it to,,wanted to pull the seats out and make a big project out of it ( big $ )
plus at 38k it was not covered under any warrenty
