No additives for my HHR's oil, here a gig on Lucas Oil Stabilizer:

We have an oil pump with a pickup in the oil pan, and in general a totally different method of lubrication delivery throughout the engine using pathways and channels, as well as utilizing pressure from the pump to move the oil around to areas needing lubrication.
Although, I can respect that YOU don't want to use additives don't over generalize "tests" and "theories" you see on the internet. Anyone can open up a website and call themselves an expert on anything, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is true.
I was just stating what I had done and expessed that it worked for me and it is worth a try if they want.

Hi All,
I know this is an old thread but my Ecotec does the same thing. Odd that you only hear it after the motor warms up. Its almost a clacking noise. Did anyone ever find out anything other than that it was normal?? Just wondering. Thanks.

It could be just a little piston slap or rattle too. Our pistons don't have a deep skirt to reduce friction and the rings have to work harder to keep compression as a result. The piston can "rock" a little as it moves up and down and that extra vibration can cause an audible rattle as well.

Nah. GM's been doing their engines that way for the past eight years and none have failed because of the new design. It's just another way of gaining power and fuel economy by reducing the friction in the engine, but it makes for a noisier engine. Some people have gotten real irritated and sued GM over it, but I don't think anyone's won anything yet.

Thanks Crafty...BTW, its in an 04 Saturn Vue, I don't have an HHR but since a lot of the mechanicals are similar I enjoy browsing here as well. Since I've got plenty of experience under the hood, hopefully I'll be able to help someone here as well...Appreciate the help!

Hi,
I'm new here. Just wanted you to know that I had my new HHR back to the dealer last week for what I thought was a lifter noise. I also only heard it from inside the car which I thought was a little wierd. The service advisor told me that all the 2.2 ecotec engines have that noise and it's nothing to worry about. Hope he's right. Looks like I do what eveyone else does.....turn up the radio.
