By the way I was wrong about something; originally I thought the OHio lemon law was 5 times but its actually 3 times. This is GM's last chance with this car and quite honestly I dont even want to deal with it anymore but like you said by law I need to give them another chance. We shall see what happens on Monday

So I bring in the car this morning for the same problem with the steering and the knocking on the floor and now the dealer is saying the havent found anything.I went out with different mechanic and he said they havent found anything but he did hear a distinct noise and he's not sure what it is. Either way this is the third time taking in this car for the same reason and they're keeping it until tomorrow. hopefully this time it will be fixed

man they tried to fix my car 3 times and it never worked. Replaced the steering rack, intermediate shaft, tried to lubricate things and NONE of it did even the slightest bit of help.

Good news is though that it hasn't gotten any worse in the last 30k miles

Hvae you checked the Florida Lemon Law on that?? I did and it says 3 times for the same thing. I think mine qualifies for the lemon law. Honestly I've had it with the noise and problems. Who's to say something else isnt going to break down. Funny thing is I still havent heard from the dealer. As far as I kow the only thing they did was test drive it once or twice and found nothing because when i first dropped it off I watched them put it iun a bay with no lifts and when i returned to test drive it it was at the same spot. If they dont do anything I'm taking it to another dealer then I'm getting rid of it if I qualify for the lemon law. We shall see

just for clarification though, does the lemon law only apply if they can't fix the problem at all, or is it if they fix it 3 times but it keeps breaking?

Lemon law

Be sure to study your states lemon law very carefully to make sure you've "got your ducks in a row" Do noises qualify? How much will you be charged per mile for your usage? ETC.

yeah it really says it has to be a MAJOR problem that effects/impairs safety, value, use of the vehical. Which that noise (who knows what it really is) doesn't really effect the car at all other than being an annoyance. I doubt the lemon law would work on this.

Cool

I'm a first timer to this board and funny that the first thing that caught my eye on the forums was the steering rattle issue. I too have had the rattle for quite some time. I ignored it at first but it got progressively louder and more annoying so I finaly took it in a couple of weeks ago. They kept it for a week as I was having a few other things taken care of, but in any case, they did the steering shaft bulleting that you all were mentioning and all it did was leave my steering wheel off center and the noise/rattle actually got louder . I'm on visit #2 and driving a loaner now. This time I took the service writer with me on a drive so that he could hear the noise for himself. Luckily it started rattling right out of the driveway to the dealership so our ride was pretty short. He at least said. 'ok, I heard it now so now I know what we're looking for'. They've had it 2 days now and i'm supposed to hear back from them today. I didn't realize this was such a common problem.
I'll post an update as soon as I hear something back from them and test the car out for myself.

Thumbs up The starter of this thread has a word to all

Hi folks,
I am glad to see I am not alone on this issue of the mysterious rattle, but after 2000 miles since the last visit (3 in all) I am happy to report I have not had the rattle return. Let's recap shall we? Visit one to my original dealer got me nothing but a free loaner and a "can't hear the noise, so we can't fix it". Needless to say I went to a different dealer. Visit number two to a different dealer, proved to be a turning point. I brought a copy of the TSB with me and when they test drove it they heard the noise and said they thought there might be more to then the steering shaft. They replaced it and the two front struts since the bushings were not properly installed at the factory. But alas they still heard the noise. They asked if they could keep it (who was I to argue my loaner was an '07 Equinox). They talked to GM techs directly and were ordered to replace the steering rack. I got my car back for a week till the parts came in. When they did, I got another loaner ('07 HHR), and they installed the rack but still heard the noise. More meeting with the GM tech at headquarters and they were ordered to replace the whole steering column. I got the car back the next afternoon, drove to PA from IL and had no noise what so ever the whole trip. Been driving on our lovely IL roads ever since and still haven't heard the noise.
So what do we do now? I believe a little enlightenment towards GM customer service by everyone in this forum is in order to start with, and if that don't get us anywhere a letter to the Automotive editor at the newspaper would be my next step. Any other suggestions I'm open to all.
If your in the Chicago suburbs Sunrise Chevrolet seems to know what they're doing. At least I'll say they are persistent.

UPDATE! Well, after 3 days at the dealership, got a call from the service manager telling me they have to order a replacement column for my car. They can isolate the problem and know exactly where it's coming from, they just were'nt sure how to correct it. Apparently gm engineering is aware of the problem is is re-engineering parts to repair the noise. (thus the backlog in replacement parts.) The service manager at this particular dealership went as far as questioning the replacement of the steering column as it may only be a temporary fix that will fail after a few months. They assured him they have had complete success with these replacements and have yet to get one back. So as many of you have probably come to find out, I'm waiting for my replacement steering column to come in to take my car back. The good thing is they are putting me in a loaner every time i take my car back now. I'll give the dealership this much, they've been persistent with trying to get the problem corrected once they actually found it.
