steering wheel shake finally resolved
In February of 2015 I started to finally replace the front end in my 2007 hhr.
Struts, calipers, pads, rotors brake hoses, hubs, bearing seals.
So in march I started to have shaking in my steering wheel. Took it for a tire balance and it was better but not resolved. Took it back again and was told I need new tires...
So in June I found a deal on toyo tourevo tires so I jumped on the opportunity. Left the shop and the damn steering wheel was still Shaky. Went back to the shop and asked for a rebalance... Still Shaky..
Went to GM dealer for a balance to make sure it was all cool... Still shaking.. Went back to GM again they checked over the front end and said everything was OK.. Decided to change tie rod ends because They were moving too freely but not bad.. Got a wheel alignment.. Still Shaky.. Went for road force balance, still shaking but a bit better.
Left it alone for a while and it got worse.. Someone mentioned sometimes axles can bind up a bit at high speed even though there is no clicking when turning.. So i changed the axles.. No difference...
Decided maybe the hubs were bad.. Changed the hubs again (under warranty).. No difference...
Decided to do the 3oclock and 9oclock test one day to check everything over and there was a tiny tiny clicking noise..
Couldn't figure out where it was comming from so I raised the car had someone shake the wheel and clicking was gone... Dropped the car shook again and clicking was back..
Decided to drop the control arm and check the ball joints.. The ball joints weren't lose but when they moved freely in the center and got tight and scratchy when moved to the outer.. So since I had new ball joints anyway I decided to grind and press out the old ones and put in new ones.. Torqued everything up and went for a drive... Still damn shakey, raised the car, did the shake test again and the damn clicking was there still..then i got my dad to shake the wheel and I did a very throughout inspection...
That's when I saw it.. The part of the ball joint that went into the steering knuckle and held in with the pinch bold was moving a fraction of an inch.. Decided to ignore torque specs and bump torque a bit.. Went for a drive and there was a remarkable difference but still not perfect.. Decided to bump up torque to 60lbs, went for a drive and not even a hint of shake..
So it seems like after 200, 000 kms the steering knuckle might wear out a bit..
Been 2 weeks @ 150km per day @ 100km/ hour with zero shake..
