I'm glad I found this thread, I have the same problem.
I thought maybe it was a safety thing to take two hits to undo the door, just in case someone hit the fob as you were going down the road..hate to have kiddies fall out of the back. (oops it's not supposed to have a back seat)

I don't have experience with the standard but having made several attempts to dislodge my child I discovered the need to be in park before the the door will open. I don't think it is a lock function because the handle seems to work even when the power locks are engaged.

I wonder if this is related to my problem with a 4-door. I almost always have to hit the unlock (on the fob) 3 times to get the driver side rear door to unlock. The plunger moves up on the second like it is supposed to, but it is not unlocked until the 3rd press.
