strange steering noise
hi all
2007 lt2 2.4l auto
this started last week.
when ever the steering wheel is moved ,you hear a low whine(zzzzzzzzz, zzzzzzz)when turning wheel back and forth.
kind of like power steering pump whine(i know we are electric)
not loud yet ,but loud enough that my wife noticed it.
no sign of any electric steering problems yet,no jerky motion or indications in the dic. that would indicate a problem
edit: it makes this sound also with engine off and you turn the wheel
thanks jeff

Hmmm, interesting symptoms for sure.
A couple of thoughts on it.
You may have something rubbing under the vehicle, like a bit of road debris or a small branch caught up in the suspension. Another thing to look at are the inner tie rod boots on the steering rack, if one is torn the lubricant will leak out of the rack and produce more of a binding or sticking sensation, but they can get noisy.
Also look under the dash to make sure nothing has become dislodged and is rubbing on the intermediate shaft, or you might have a power steering motor drive gear that needs lubrication.
Just watch doing too much "dry steering" with the vehicle stopped, that puts excess strain on the steering components and it will eventually cause premature wear.

it almost seems to be rubber on rubber sound(squeak)
no debris and nothing under dash that i could see.
i dont have to turn much to hear it at all.
due for oil change next week, will get my mechanic to have a look.

I had that same rubber on rubber squeek. It semed worse in warm weather, and seems to have gone away on its own. I decided I could live with that intermittant sound, and didn't really want the dealer pulling the steering column apart looking for it. I had almost forgotten about it, until I read your post, I haven't heard it for at least two years.

hi all
today it disappeared after a rainy day driving and then a warm sunny day.
not a hint of any noise whatsoever.
weird
i got my wife to move the wheel why i was under the dash(when it was happening),it seems to have been within the steering column.
not in the shaft or elec assist motor.
loudest at top of wheel close to driver. is the clockspring module mounted in rubber where the shaft comes up thru?
thanks,jeff
