Stubborn SRS Codes and subsequent seat replacement

Hi all

As some of you know I recently purchased my first HHR. I have been on the task of repairing numerous issues but this one is proving rather stubborn. Prior to purchase the SRS light was not on but a couple of days later it came on. I checked the codes and what came up was

B0081-71 Passenger presence system 1 erratic

B1870-06 Device ignition 1 circuit short

After numerous searches I came to the conclusion that the weight sensor had a fault. The second code I understood would probably clear when the first was corrected.
Since the original seats were in really bad shape I sourced a better pair from a local yard and put them in. I have since tried to clear the codes twice. The first time I just disconnected the Neg cable for about 30 mins. That was unsuccessful. The second time I disconnected both Pos and Neg for a couple of hours. Again unsuccessful. Radio stations are still there as well as the exact same codes leaving me to believe they are the old codes.
Anyone that can cast a little light on this would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not 100% but it is possible the dealer may have to relearn the sensor to your car.

My guess is fix the second code and the first will go away.
Seems like a power problem.

Did you try to Google the codes?
Was the ignition recall done recently?

Yep. Utilized both the HHR forum and general web searches but nothing conclusive. From the forum I went to the recall lookup and the site did not show any open recalls off the vin. What would give me some satisfaction would be to clear the
Vehicles memory. Then see if it trips the same codes again or gives me new ones. What am I doing wrong in this regard? If I still have the stations in the radio after disconnecting the battery then I would assume the SRS codes would remain as well yes? How do I completely wipe all data?

The SRS computer shuts down completely after 15 minutes.

The reason I asked about the ignition recall is that some have reported poorly trained techs screwing things up.

The second code you cite seems to say (by it's title) that the ignition switch is not energizing the SRS module (SDM).

The SDM lives near the shift lever under the console; has anybody been messing in that area?

Check YOUR connection of the SRS connectors under the seats.....particularly the one on the passenger side.

GM vehicles have been notorious for having a connector problem with the SRS (5 new GM's in the past 7 years, all had the problem). Make sure the male/female portion of each connector is clean, no corrosion, no bent pins, etc. Maybe use a little dielectric grease and assure they are reconnected firmly and properly.

Let me go back 1 step. Did the SRS illuminate prior to the seat installation? You can see where I'm going with this.

I am not aware or sure if anyone had been messing in the area of the shift lever as I have only owned the car for about 3 or 4 weeks. But when I removed the seats, I got a lot of lock tite shredding from the seat bolts so I concur no one has been servicing that area.....

Even before swapping the seats, the SRS light was on. I dont remember seeing the pass air bag light off lit up tho...... Anyways, even before finding the seats after reading posts I removed the pass seat and checked the connections. All looked good to go. Then when installing the replacement seats, I made sure all connections were tight and of good. My hope was to replace the seats, clear the computer and see what kind of codes would come up with the new seats. Again, Im not sure if the codes were actually cleared as when I reconnected the battery, not only did the same codes present themselves but the radio still had the current time and presets. Is there a battery backup somewhere?

Donbrew,

Please explain in further detail about the SRS computer shutting down after 15 minutes?

The radio and the SDM have "Keep Alive" capacitors. The SDM only lasts for about 15 minutes, (the book says to deactivate the SRS disconnect the battery for 15 minutes). That is plenty of time for the computer to stop and you can mess with airbags without fear of explosions. The radio may last a lot longer, mine has been disconnected for days the stations stay, the time gets forgotten quickly.

The SDM (System Diagnostic Module, or something like that) stays alive for a few minutes in case the power goes off in an accident, then it does a reset/retest EVERY time the ignition is turned on. Safety!

I do not know how or when or where the SDM codes get saved, but I think they are basically transient; they either trigger a light or they don't, no storage. If the light is on an airbag scantool can retrieve a code, no light=no code.
That may be completely wrong!
