It tells you how to remove it in the owners manual. If you don't have a manual they are listed as a "sticky" at the top of the problem page on the forum. Chevy seemed to have known about the problem when they wrote the book is all I can figure. Mostly on the '06 and some 07's and maybe just a couple of 08's but wouldn't swear to it but I know most of the words.

Another thing to check is your shifter button. I find on some of these that the button is stuck in. If I whop on the shifter with my fist the button pops out and the key releases.
If you haven't searched the threads the access to the release is at the bottom of the column near the ignition key. Open the access cover and press the release lever to get the key out.

This allows the linkage to move to the proper detent and the key to be turned to the "Off Position, to remove the key".
Good luck;

This time the car wouldn't start occasionally. Found out it was that shifter button not popping out all the way. Just moving the shifter out of park, and back in a couple of times, and the car would start. It began happening way too often for my Wife, so we took it in and they installed another new shifter assy.
