As to helping you, all I can say is see if your warrenty is still good and have it replaced. I had to have mine replaced 3 times because of the same problem and an instulation error, causing it to break again. I also have gotten my key stuck many times. Most of the time all you have to do is yank on the steering wheel real hard in both directions. But the one time the ECM shorted and left the entire car with out power with the windows and sun roof open. I hope this does not happen to you. The last time the shifter was replaced it was with a new one and it works a lot better, cept for the fact that the release button is black instead of chrome.

So I just got home with my 2006 HHR. As I parked the car, the shift button will not spring out. I cannot get the shifter to stay engaged in Park, and had to use the emergency key release. I'm guessing something in the shifter is broken.
The car only has 219xx miles on it but I'm out of the 36 month warranty. Man am I pissed!

25860318 $91.00 and change from GMPD. This is from an 09 - same insides but has the boot and side bin - nice upgrade. BTW needle nose pliers gets the clip off the cable. That's the easy part.

Sweet Raptor Jeebus! The dealership by my house wants $120 just to diagnose it. GM Customer service told me that since I've only got 21,9xx, they might be able to help me. After it's diagnosed by a dealer.
Looks like GMPD is getting an order.
Edit: When I tried to order, it tries to give me a different part number. I've e-mail GMPD to see what's up with that, and I'll let everyone know.

Well, I got a response from GM Parts Direct.
Unfortunately, driving my wife's Suburban isn't a viable option as far as gas prices. So I caved and picked up the standard automatic shifter assembly. I got the e-mail from GMPD as I pulled into the dealership. During the teardown of my HHR (the car is messy, I have a 4 year old), I found this:
Yeah. I'm more than a little angry that GM hasn't issued a recall for this. 21,903 miles on the car. This shouldn't happen.
Part number 25860318 has been superseded to part number 25995462. This is a special order part and should ship 7-10 business days from the date of your order.
