Didn’t you have an issue with the clutch master cylinder awhile ago, isn’t there an inspection port in the bell housing, could this spring have fallen in , thru that port?
Just spit balling, is doesn’t appear to be anything that belongs in the clutch/ bell housing area

There's a small hole in the back of the bellhousing, just barely large enough for this spring to fit through. But it's horizontal, no way it could have entered through that.

Just an idea, at least that is eliminated.
looks way to weak to be a clutch disc spring.
maybe some from the assembly line? It doesn’t seem to belong there

It doesn't look like anything inside is missing a spring, but then, I've never had a manual transmission open before. Yes, it looks smaller than the springs in the clutch pack. I'll take a look at the TOB today, with a mirror. The spring was pretty clean. Very odd.

Do I need an alignment tool for the clutch, or can I just do it without?

KY Clutch kit comes with one.

I’ve used a cut down broom handle or a deep socket to roughly line up the clutch disc , I don’t recommend eyeballing it , but you could try .

Cool, so it's mostly needed for install, not really needed for removal?

Way back in time I've eyeballed a few with the engine out. Even done the deep well socket method before.
Heck, I even eyeballed one in an old pickup with engine still in. Had to get my head against the floorboard hump for that one.

Since you have the engine/trans out as a unit, shouldn't be hard to do on the floor without the tool. May take a couple attempts.
