Time to replace starter 07 HHR 2.4L?
#11
I did re-check all the fuses/relays, and some were a bit loose, but none too bad. I did notice the entire fuse box was ~slightly~ loose, is that normal? I'll re-check it.
I will degrease the front of my motor and check the connections on the starter. I do have a very small oil drip somewhere and it's got the front of my motor pretty dirty.
If I have to replace the starter, I presume these are the steps:
1. raise the front end
2. disconnect the battery
3. undo connections to the starter
4. unscrew the 2 starter bolts
5. reverse the above w/new starter

I have a 2007 hhr and the starter would make a dry scratching/grinding noise when i started it. This morning it wouldn't start and after 3 more tries the sound stored and I can just hear the starter spinning but the car won't turn on. Is my starter screwed?

I believe you Bendix on the starter is gone or not engaging, but I can't guarantee it over the internet. I would say you need a new starter...Its a pretty easy fix depending on you tools/mechanical inclination... The starter is mounted right near the bottom of the engine block...Unlike my buddies focus where ford buried it behind the intake manifold, and it was nearly impossible to get to

WELCOME!!! If your engine is turning over, your starter is working...If our engine is not turning, it'll usually make a noise much different than when it cranks over the engine...

Thanks. Well, the sound it made was horrible. This morning the car stopped turning on. It stopped making the horrible grinding/scratching sounds and I can hear it spinning when I turn the ignition but nothing happens. The lights are fine though, so it's not the battery. I mention that cause I have seen mentioned that sometimes the battery makes it seem like the starter is dead. I tried a jump start and it didn't work.

If it was me, I would pull the starter and check the entire gear ring for damage.
3rd thing could be loose/broken mounting bolts on the starter.
It's always a good idea to check all the mechanical parts of the starting system when it makes any kind of abnormal grinding type noises.
And ALWAYS, disconnect the battery before working around the starter.

Read his first post again about the scratching/grinding sounds. A 2nd possibility is he's got a chewed up flex plate also.

Well, it was definitely the starter. I pulled the old one out and the gear inside was sliding back and forth, and pieces of magnet/inductor were falling out slashing with what looked like a cover or shield that was cracked. Once I swapped it, the car started immediately. It drags now and seems to waste a bit more gas but it may be that my tires are low too. Would a p0341 obd2 code have anything to do with that?
