my 2007 HHR has been a good one, right now it has 227,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, now the timing chain needs to be replaced. I have been told that when replacing the timing chain it's best to go ahead and replace the waterpump. As this is not a job you want to do twice is this true? Also i am 60 years old I am presently unemployed as I am stranded away from home. That being said I cannot aafford to put it in the shop ($1300 my cheapest estimate) so I have decided to do it myself. I havent worked on cars in a long time and alot has changed, but i believe i can do this if i could just find one good instructional video that shows the job start to finish. PLEASE HELP!!! Unless you have the knowledge, skills, correct tools and experience, this is not a job for the amateur.
Should the water pump be replaced ? Yes. Since you've already got it torn down for the chain and tensioners.

As far as videos. YouTube has numerous ones.
Also try searching this site. There are many threads here and some even have links to videos(most came from YouTube)

 

With that many miles, it wouldn't hurt to spend the extra $40 on the water pump. it is easier to do it with the chain off, assuming you are changing both chains.

Remember to change the guides and tensioners.

What is going on with the chain that you can't get it home? That may mean it's more to the repair.
