I just had a sensor fail on my a few weeks ago. It just all of a sudden showed 0 psi.

I replaced it then did the relearn to fix the problem.

When they rotated your tires if they did not do the relearn it would still show it on the display in the same position no matter where the tire was installed on the car.

Not all tpms systems need to be relearned.

Sadly Some shops don't bother with relearning the tpms during a tire rotation

I am due for new tires any ways, so I'll just go ahead and get some new sensors while I'm at it. Is there a certain kind I have to get or are they pretty much universal?

2008 models need to have the firmware in the RCDLR updated. They came from the factory with firmware that allowed the program to get corrupted if the battery died. TSB# 08-03-16-001B describes the condition and fix.
