You could simply drain the mystery fluid and replace the new filter , and put in the correct fluid

 

If he used Dexron III the world will not end; it is what came in the car in 2006 the spec was changed in 2007 not the transmission.

Mercon is a different story.

 

So any idea what he put into the transmission? How many quarts did he put in? Understand draining this fluid, you will still have a gallon in the torque conveter. There is a technique in filling these up, remvoing a fill plug to see when it is full. You do NOT want to try to put the transmission inot gear if it is not full, you WILL burn up the clutches. The 4T40E transmission takes 7.4 qts to fill if you drop the pan. So you would have needed almost 2 gallons, not just one. answer the questions, hopefully this is an easy fix.

 

Pretty sure its a 4T45. Not a 4T40E.

 

4T45E and the volume specs for both fill methods are in the Owner Manual.

 

He cant find the container I guess he threw it away, but I went to auto zone today and put it on code reader, it pulled codes: p0741 torque converter solenoid circuit performance or stuck off. And p0757 shift solenoid b stuck on . So my question is do I try changing fluid and filter first to see if that fixes it and these aren't a false read or?

 

There is a chance a change will fix it. Those codes basically mean the solenoids are so dirty they are stuck. No false about it.

 

So are you saying to change fluid and filter or all of it? If all of it do you know where those are located and how you change them?

 

If he only put 1 gallon in it is nearly 1 gallon short of full; it should have taken 7 qts.

I would check the level first. It would be nice to know what was put in, I can't believe somebody just walked into the store and didn't notice there were several different types of fluid. Either type of DEXRON is OK. If he put something else in you are going to need a complete flush and fill.

The good news is the solenoids are replaceable for less than a new trans.
