Is this a harsh sound followed by the transmission "banging" into the next gear, or is it more of a "thump" as it shifts?

Its more of a thump..or a slight kick..and then my engine light goes on for a bit then shuts of and it repeats every so often...

no issues yet , but I'll pay more attention to it, in my 07 with 94,000 miles. I think I need to change my trans filter and fluid, I skipped that step awhile ago!!

OK, take it to your local auto parts store like Advance or Autozone and have them pull the codes(its free), then post them up here, it sounds like you may have a problem with the TCM(Transmission Control Module)or something else electronic.

The 4T-45E transmission is all electronically controlled, long gone are the days of the vacuum modulators, there are a couple of different possibilities here but until Doog47 gets the codes pulled...it would just be guessing.

My '09 with a 2.4L blew the trans up wtih 49k mls. It was so bad it cracked the case. Gm reps arrived too. I do normal highway driving at 120 mls per day. Second one seems to be better with 50k on it now. I brought it in for surging and they told me the cam phasers are bad. Flushed the trans....

fingers crossed

When you say, "shop" do you mean an independent auto repair or a GM Dealer?

A dealer should rapidly recognize a steering column problem. Canadian GM Dealers were issued a recall for the column. However, you MAY be to late for this, if it wasn't done already.

In any event they should know what the problem is.
