I've noticed the same thing with ours when first starting out on a cold Morning. (Cold here being 35 degrees or so!) But within a couple of miles or so the "Whine" goes away and it's shifting just fine.

The older design GM transmissions are pretty loud when cold like that. The internal pump has to work pretty hard to get the pressure up in that cold fluid.

Do you mean the tranny in an '06 HHR is an "old" design??

The transmissions in a lot of GM FWD vehicles are "old" designs. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

The 4T/45E is one of the "newer" programmable transmissions.
I haven't had the opportunity to investigate the "newer" 6 speed FWD (re: 2008 Malibu LTZ) yet.
GMPT & Windsor Trans., make a lot of "upgrades" of both software and hardware as model years progress.
