Uneven Tire Wear
#11
How about that it's a FWD car and when were the tires rotated last? 16k should have at lease been done twice. Please note most all in town driving. Just my take on it. Even if it is right on spec. they will tell you they had to adjust something so you will feel better about the money you spent. Again just my take on it. I Have had my 06 98K on the rack three times and never adjusted anything.

It covers everything EXCEPT the wearable items, like tires, brake pads & shoes, clutch disc, & of course not any alignments. Since anyone can drive around the block & hit a pothole & need aligned..

I just dropped the car off at the dealership for it to be looked at.
I am the original owner.Tires were rotated twice, alignment never done before.
I will let you all know what the problem was when it is finished.

Somebody has done an alignment previously, when they should not have, or a bent tie rod end giving the wrong toe setting. Both fronts wearing on the outside equally indicates excessive toe in. Unless the same alignment guy fiddled with the camber using a bad machine or wrong numbers. If they had added the camber kit you would know it since they would have charged you around $100 over the alignment fee for the $4.00 in parts and 10 minutes labor.
The only routine setting that can be changed on a stock HHR alignment is TOE.

And, to the OP, sorry about this, but you're probably going to need new tires, too.

Just picked up the car. They did an alignment($90).They said the toe was off a little on both sides,a little more on the driver side(that side did have a little more tire wear then the passenger side).
I forgot to mention that even with the uneven tire wear (and the apparent alignment issue)the car drove perfectly strait.
Hopefully the tires will now wear a little more evenly. The edges that are worn look like they may only have about 5,000 more miles left on that part of the tire. The rest of the tread looks like it has many more miles left to it.Might end up only getting 20,000 miles on these tires. At 16,500 now.I put about 5,000 miles a year on the car.So another year maybe. We'll see.A good chance to jump up to some nice 18 or 19 inch rims and tires(haha)! Those fender gaps need to be filled!!
It could just be that it is a front wheel drive car that is mostly used for around town driving.Very rarely on long highway runs. That type of driving could eat up the tires faster.

Wear on the outside of the front tire(s) either too much positive camber, or its a toe in problem. If you are over the 7500 mile GM Front end alignment warrantee, get to a good front end, frame shop and have the alignment corrected before you totally trash your front tires. If its a camber problem you will need to have a camber kit installed, not a big deal, but from the factory camber is not adjustable.

Almost ALL city driving says "curbs" to me, I do a fair mix and I do feel curbs occasionally.
Did you specifically tell the "advisor" and/or tech that these are 17 inch wheels? Seems obvious, but they ASSuME that all HHR's have 16's; I would even bet that some of the SS alignment problems come from that.

I would put the eaten up tires in the rear and leave them there until new tire time. If the toe is out the car will track straight, tires wear evenly (in a bad way) maybe the steering wheel will be off center.

Why would the wheel diameter matter?I told the advisor nothing about that.

I never touch curbs either. I am not sure about diameter affecting geometry, nut it seems that it might. It just never hurts to point things out that are not what the tech expects.
