If you were serious about running diesel, I would only add 1 qt, with the rest using oil.

And this would only be a short around the block kinda trip, & drain as quick asd you could upon return.

Driving any further risks wiping out the bearings.

Generally oil smoke at idle, can be the valve guides, as that is when the engine has greatest vacuum.

But a leak down test would be recommended to confirm this.

Valve stem seals won’t be detected during a leak down test. But at idle oil can get sucked past faulty seals!

Intake valve stem seals are the ones to replace if need be.

True, but loose clearance on valve guides will definitely be detected on a leak down test.
It can tell one if it's the guides, or the rings. You just have to listen during the testing.

Or check the rubber elbow just before the throttle body for evidence of oil being sucked out of the valve cover at highway speeds in which case would be the higher vacuum.

Curious as to the why, when the guides are not in the combustion chamber? If loose guides cause leakage past the valves, how would you know it was guides, and not seat mating surface?

The oil has to get down the valve stem past the guides to lubricate the guides but as the wear to much oil can be sucked in during the intake stroke.
