Video: Steering column

Car is off, not moving, and requires very little steering wheel effort to recreate the sound. It is the standard steering shaft issue, from what I gather. What part causes this (part #, diagram if possible)?

Here is a short clip of it, sorry for it being sideways, my iphone uploads everything sideways, and I am not much of a tech person.

Has anyone replaced it and did it work or come back? I know GM filed a lawsuit, but as of yet have we gotten a better part? Or will the new GM do this again?

i had the same issue, they replaced the column and its better but that sound is still there, just a little less, its quite annoying, goes with the 'cheapness' of the car lol

Wow .. Thats a Bummer.

What year and model is your HHR and how many miles are on it ??

Do you also notice it while driving slowly on a not so smooth surface road or parking lot ??

It's an 07, and it is barely noticeable under anything other than braking. The rotors have a good bit of surface deposits so they chatter bad. In turn that shakes the wheel pretty good, and the sound is driving me crazy.

If I remember right I think there was also an issue with the Intermediate Shaft unless thats the same issue worded a different way.
You might want to do a search to see what you can find or maybe somebody will respond on this.
Trying not to be paranoid here but dosen't it make you wonder if the Dealer just told you they fixed it but didn't ??

Is this that intermediate shaft issue? Where the shaft has 2 sections. The spline where the two join up is lubed, but that lube dries up and then the noise happens.
I saw a fix where they remove a boot and spray lithium grease into the spline and then replace the boot.
not sure if that applies to the hhr.

mine was rattling much more than that when I would go over bumps the whole steering column would rattle and shake and make that same noise so they replaced it and it fixed that issue..but if you do what hes doing in the video, that noise is still there...maybe its just normal?

The first link you provided is particularly interesting and provides another avenue to explore if an owner encounters the symptoms describe. It could greatly assist in locating the nature of the problem.

I suggest a sticky for that.

The second link provides information that is posted in the sticky section for the Chevrolet TSB's related to the HHR (I believe I also posted the information in a recent related thread). But is agood review.
