I've come full circle on wheel bearings. My first cars had ball bearings which required frequent adjustment. Roller bearings don't really need adjustment as they usually have more rollers than the ball bearings have balls and a roller contacts in a line while the balls contact at a point so roller bearings have more contact area. That larger contact area creates a little more drag so they went back to ball bearings but these can't be adjusted.

I hadn't heard about brake calipers that pull the pads back. I'll have to look at a set to find out how they do that and keep the pistons from backing off so far that you have to pump the brakes to get them pushed out again.
I think some how the seal on them just pulls them off enough to not drag. In the old days the calipers would drag the pads a little and the play in the bearing would knock them back. Today the piston just pulls back enough so there is no drag since the roller bearings really have little to no play to knock the pads back.

I Summit Racing has a cheap dial indicator as well as Harbor Freight. For this kind of work you realy don't need a high buck one.

I have been told if you pull and push the wheel in and out at the top or bottom and you feel movement often it is over .002. I still recomend using the gauge though.

These hubs can go bad as early as 50,000 and some will last longer. But it is an issue on all FWD cars or cars using sealed ball bearing hubs. Also note the claimed Rotor Warp is a industry wide issue not just the HHR. Almost every web site you check for any make it will have this claimed issue.

I too once though it was warped hubs but I finally learned and have never had the issue since.

The '07 HHR I just bought has 60k on it and is braking just fine, but I want to stay on top of this so that I know what to look for whenever this problem comes up.

They will make noise when the time comes! It is noticeable! You will hear/feel it.

I just came across this post because I am now struggling with the warped rotor issues. I purchased my 2007 HHR used in 2009. I drove it about 4 years before needing to have the brakes replaced. Within the last 2 years I've had to have the new rotors turned at least 3 times. And the warping begins approx 2 months after they are turned.

I am going to replace the rotors myself this time and I would like to know if there are any particular type or spec I need to look for.

New pads and drilled rotors. 15,000 miles and the shaking wheel is ridiculous. 3rd set of pads and rotors and the problem stays away for about 10000 to 15000 miles. There has got to be a fix

Hi Donbrew, I have tried to follow through much of this post however, my eyes are far sighted and I have trouble navigating the many many pages of forum. Can you help me locate where "the fix" is discussed? I appreciate any assistance.
