Warranty Question

So I took my '06 HHR LS into a Shop this past weekend to have a couple things looked at, get an estimate on what we would be looking at for the repairs so we could start planning out a couple summer trips later on...

Anyway, this is a mechanic shop that I've found to be very good and reliable and does honest work.

So, the mechanic came out, turns out he was the same guy who did some prior work on my car a couple months back...

He told me, that for one of the problems I was asking them to check out, I could get it repaired at a dealer under GM's 5yr/100K Mile Warranty; because I was under 100K Miles he told me.

I'm a little stumped on this...

I thought my car was out of Warranty, because it is a 2006 so its beyond 5 years... but he told me that because its under 100K (I'm around 78,000'ish) then it still qualifies for Warranty Service...

Can anyone verify this? What IS the warranty on an '06 HHR?

Well, you didn't bother to include what the problem is, so I'll give generic answer.

You're out of the powertrain warranty period. It's a 5 year/100k mile, which ever occurs FIRST. Obviously the 5 years was first and has passed you by.

Now, if it's an emission related part/issue, you could fall under the federal mandated emission warranty. Not sure since you didn't include what you're actual issue is.

As far as that mechanic telling you what he did. Totally wrong.

The warranty at the time was for five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain, whichever comes first. So the tech is in error, but warranties can be difficult to interpret at times, even for Lawyers like me.

Here's a link to GM's warranty extension announcement from when your HHR was new....

GM increases warranty to five years/100,000 miles - Autoblog

And the warranty in its entirety can be found in your owner's manual.

All that being said, there are occasions where GM dealers are authorized to make "Out of Warranty" repairs under GM's Customer Goodwill Program.

Again the psychic link with George is working.

The 2006's did not have the 5 year/ 100,000 miles powertrain warranty UNLESS you purchased a certified used, I believe.

That 5 year/100,000 mile warranty started with the 2007's.

Actually Mike, there is no warranty info in the 2010 owners manual (Mine). Not sure about the other years.
I think all my warranty info came in an extra brochure with all my new car paperwork.

Not too proud to admit when I make a "dumb" and Snoopy is correct on the 2006 warranty. Here's the exact verbiage from GM....

"NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY

GM vehicles registered in the U.S.A. are covered for 3 years/36,000 miles (whichever comes first). The complete vehicle is covered, including tires, towing to your nearest Chevrolet dealership, and cosmetic corrosion resulting from defects. Repairs will be made to correct any vehicle defect, and most warranty repairs will be made at no charge. In addition, rust-through corrosion will be covered for 6 years/100,000 miles (whichever comes first). See dealer for details.

CORROSION PROTECTION
Chevrolet vehicles are designed and built to resist corrosion. All body and sheet metal components are warranted against rust-through corrosion for 6 years/100,000 miles (whichever comes first). Application of additional rust-inhibiting materials is not required under the corrosion coverage and none is recommended. See your Chevrolet dealer for terms of this limited warranty.

ASSEMBLY
Chevrolet vehicles and their components are assembled or produced by different operating units of General Motors, its subsidiaries, or suppliers to GM worldwide. We sometimes find it necessary to produce Chevrolet vehicles with different or differently sourced components than originally scheduled. Since some options may be unavailable when your vehicle is assembled, we suggest you verify that your vehicle includes the equipment you ordered and that, if there were changes, they are acceptable to you.

ENGINES
Chevrolet products are equipped with engines produced by GM Powertrain or other suppliers to GM worldwide. The engines in Chevrolet products may also be used in other GM makes and models.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ALTERATIONS AND WARRANTIES
Installations or alterations to the original equipment vehicle (or chassis) as distributed by General Motors are not covered by the General Motors New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The special body company, assembler, equipment installer, or upfitter is solely responsible for warranties on the body or equipment and any alterations (or any effect of the alterations) to any of the parts, components, systems, or assemblies installed by GM. General Motors is not responsible for the safety or quality of design features, materials, or workmanship of any alterations by such suppliers.

Powertrain Warranty
In addition to the standard 3-year/36,000-mile (whichever comes first) New Vehicle Limited Warranty, Chevy Aveo and Cobalt come with a 5-year/60,000-mile (whichever comes first) Powertrain Warranty that:

has a $0 deductible
is transferable to another owner at no charge
The Powertrain Limited Warranty is in addition to the express conditions and warranties described in the Warranty Booklet. The coverage and benefits described in the booklet under "New Vehicle Limited Warranty" are not extended or altered because of this special Powertrain Warranty.

WHAT IS COVERED
In addition to the bumper-to-bumper coverage described in the Warranty Booklet, General Motors will warrant each 2006 Chevrolet Aveo and Cobalt for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the original in-service date of the vehicle, against warrantable repairs to the powertrain components of the vehicle. The Powertrain Limited Warranty covers repairs to correct any vehicle defect related to materials or workmanship occurring during the 5-year/60,000-mile term for the following:

Engine

Emissions control system components that are identified in the Emission Warranty Parts List within the Warranty Booklet
Cylinder head, block
All internally lubricated parts
Manifolds
Timing gears, timing belt, and timing cover
Flywheel
Oil pump/oil pump housing, water pump, and fuel pump
Harmonic balancer
OHC carriers
Valve covers
Oil pan
Engine mount
Seals and gaskets
Transmission/Transaxle

Case
All internal parts
Torque converter
Transmission/transaxle mounts
Seals
Clutch
Gaskets
Front-Wheel Drive

Axle shafts and axle shaft bearings
Constant velocity joints
Wheel bearings
Supports
Front hub bearings and rear-axle hub bearings
Seals and gaskets
Towing
Towing is covered to the nearest Chevrolet dealer if your vehicle cannot be driven because of a warranted defect. Contact the Chevrolet Roadside Assistance Center for towing. Refer to the Warranty Booklet for details.

Courtesy Transportation
Interim transportation may be available under the Chevrolet Courtesy Transportation Program. Please consult your dealer for details

WHAT IS NOT COVERED
As the vehicle owner, you are responsible for the performance of the scheduled maintenance listed in your vehicle Owner's Manual. In addition to the "What Is Not Covered" section of the Warranty Booklet, this Powertrain Warranty does not cover the following items:

Wear items
Powertrain wear items, such as clutch linings
Wear items, such as brake linings
Any damage caused by owner/lessee failure to follow scheduled maintenance may not be covered by warranty
Scheduled maintenance items, such as filters, coolants and fluids, and brake pads/linings
NOTE: Interium maintenance, checks, inspections, and recommended fluids and lubricants as prescribed in the vehicle Owner's Manual are necessary to keep your vehicle in good working condition."

And to add to George's statement, the warranty is bound in my 2006's owner's manual, while it's a seperate pamphlet on my 2007's and the 2011.

So my apologies for the unintended confusion, and I should know never to make a "Concrete Statement" concerning HHR's, been burned before.

Thanks for the responses guys.

5yrs or 100,000 miles... whichever comes first.... is what I thought my Warranty was supposed to be.

The mechanic confirmed my primary problem though and gave me a good quote... a couple months ago my girlfriend was driving to work and had a little mishap with the curb; which ended up costing us a new front Strut, and a new rear Tire... soon after we got the car back though I started hearing a droning/humming sound, which I researched and determined to be the wheel bearing/hub assembly....

I was right. So now we know what the primary problem is, that I asked them to look at and confirm for me, and we know how much we need to get it fixed before making any summer trips...

The second problem, the one that the mechanic told me was covered under warranty still...

Is some sort of strange spitting type of sound, like stick your tongue between your lips and go "pbpbpb!" ... almost makes the car sound like an old Volkswagen if that makes any sense, but its not always easy to hear and a lot higher pitch then the 'tongue between the lips' sound...

The mechanic actually did not look into it because his manager forgot to note it correctly on the paper work when I checked the car in... so when I described it to him he guessed that it might have something to do with the exhaust and suggested that I take it to a dealer as it would be covered under warranty..

I left scratching my head on that one...

I might have them look into it again when I take it back for the bearing/hub work..
