Wheel shake

Wheel shake
Hi all
Driving at 40 to over 60 the steering wheel shakes. If you let go of the wheel I would guess it shakes about 1/8 inch in both directions. Maybe 1/4 inch total. hhr has a little over 36000 miles.
What is your guess? Balance? Doesn't feel ;like a tire?
thanks KK4

I'm not an ASE mechanic by any means, but I was always told by one that I worked with several years ago that wheel shake for out of balance wheels usually occurs at approx 30 mph intervals; close to 30mph, 55-60mph, etc - just the harmonics of the rotating wheel. If your problem happens pretty much continuously between 40-60mph, I'd look at bearings or something like that. However, I wouldn't rule out suspension bushings. JMHO.

I'd go for
A) wheel balance
B) bent wheel
C) rear window open/front window closed syndrome
D) wheel hub bearing bad
E) bad tire rotation technique
F) uneven tire inflation
G) piece of crud on the inside of one wheel
in that order

I put new Michelin Hydro-Edge tires on my HHR and they collect stones in the center tread. The stones are sometimes quite big and affect the balance over 45 mph.
When the stones start clicking on the pavement, I clean them out and all's well again.

Simplest thing first...have you checked that all lug nuts are tight. At one drag race, one of my friends changed one front tire for me, while I did the other. Got the call and had to stage before I could check his work. The car started darting around on the big end, and I shut down. After wobbling back to the pits, I discovered no lug nuts had been torqued on that side, one lug was broken off and the wheel was not flush with the hub at any point. Having driven to the track, I torqued what was left, and slowly drove 40 miles home. I always check my lugs now, even after leaving the dealership, before highway speeds.

update
new tires, checked bearings, alignment. rims
The shake is better but not gone. If u let go of the steering wheel u can see it shake a little. None of our other vehicles do that.
I see on the DIC the tire pressure is 42 psi should I change it to 32 psi?
Back to the shop for rotation next week.
thanks KK4
