Good Point. That's one of the problems with this forum. Members ask a question and hardly ever return for a follow-up.

Also, with 2 exceptions, many of the responders to that thread, while technically still members of this forum, appear not to be. Their last forum check-in was many years ago.

Also, notice the STATEMENT in Krusty's post. I don't think he was able to help anybody. It would be like talking to nobody.

One of mine makes a whirly noise, I think it's the turbo.

Suggest, maybe a trans. fluid pump if you have an automatic (a guess only).

Snoopy,

I think you might have a good guess here.

I have owned 5 HHR's, ... 1-2010 and 4-2011's with automatic transmissions.

The only one that didn't have this same noise was the 2011 2.2L Auto trans.

My 1rst thought was it is in the Transmission and it is a pump whirr/low pitch whine noise.

It is slightly worse on the colder days and takes a little longer to go away but it is there at every start up if the car is left for 12-24 hrs or more.

I took my 1rst 2011 1 LT to the dealer for a listen and it took them an unacceptable 30 days to come up with a Big Nothing.

Thats Technically a Lemon Law Car qualification but I did not pursue it.
Honestly I think they knew but came to the conclusion they were not going to tear down the tranny only to find out they couldn't pin point the noise and Chevrolet would not re-imburse them for all the labor.

With that high of percentage of cars making this noise, I am Very surprised there is not a TSB on the issue.

To me it is a legitimate problem and It bugs me every time I start up cold and go.
It may not cause immenant failure, but why should a new car have to sound like that. My neighbor has mentioned it to me as he can hear me comming when I leave.

I am tempted to return to the Dealer to have them call Chevrolet and address this issue.
I think the fix is not there because not many owners are Vocally complaining when they should be.

@SilverFox, please let me know when and if you make an appointment with the dealership about the sound concerns you're still experiencing.

Michelle,

Thank you for your reply.

I am mainly driving just one specific car at the moment and it does have the noise.
It seem a little more noticeable and last a little longer as the temperatures go down i.e
Trans. fluid cools in a 16 -24hr shut down time frame. Also takes longer to warm up when it is colder outside.
A CLUE ??

I went thru 30 days of trying to get this issue fixed already so at that point I thought I would keep driving it to see if if got worse or failed to where the Dealer couldn't put the issue aside again.
I since have Sold that car.
That was my first 2011 and it did not have the noise when New. It started approx 9,000 miles as I recall.
One thing that bothered me when trying to get it fixed was the issue that even if they identified the location of the noise .. would the new part/s they installed just fail again. The ratio of 2011 HHR's I have had with noise tells me they were still installing certain production parts thru 2011 that were faulty.
Are the current replacement parts faulty ??
That is an issue for Chevrolet to figure out. How can they fix the issue with more faulty Parts ??

No TSB tells me they have not recognized this problem yet.
You might want to recheck the most current list of Bulletins to see if there is anything New since I last looked.

This same 2011 car also developed the cold start up rattle in which the dealer did replace the serpentene belt and that seem to fix that problem.
Because I sold the car shortly after those issues I do not know for sure if the belt really fixed the start up rattle for sure.
