Windshield Wiper Problems

I am having a problem with the single wipe and intermittent wipe positions on my 07 HHR. In either position, it take about 6-10 times of switching to that position before it finally decides to work. Once it starts to work, I have no problems with it working again that day. Has anyone had a similar problem and how was it fixed; also, would it be covered by the powertrain warranty (yeah right) because I have 51,000 mi.

Thanks,
Jason

Mine will occasionally do a similar thing. When I put it in the pulse position sometimes the wipers will move up about an inch and then stop. Within a few seconds it will start working fine. Mine is out of warranty so I will just live with it.

Possible cause of switch failure is dirty contacting surfaces.

I had this problem on another vehicle where wipers and turn signals would refuse to respond immediately ... but after a while they would do their thing. Cold weather and a cold switch were a factor. After the vehicle and switch had warmed up there was no problem.

I assume that switch grease thickened with the cold and blocked electrical contact. I took the switch apart ... carefully .... and cleaned it.

Another thing to consider is the wiper motor itself, they can develop a dead spot on the commutator and that will mimic a bad wiper switch. As you "bump" it with the switch eventually it will get to a point where it will run, but when you shut if off it can and will land again on the dead spot.

How much did that switch cost, and was it in the steering column?
