Winshield replacement problems
#21
3 days after i bought mine, i was following a semi and heard a rock hit my window. I didn't think much of it because i didn't see any damage. About a week later it got cold here, i used my remote start, when i got in and started driving i noticed that i have a crack almost all the way across the bottom of my windsheild. The bright side is it should only cost me $100 because of my insurance. I'm glad i came in here to read about the problems you guys have had because now i'll be able to suggest that they replace it with a PPG ( with the tint) .

Don't recall if you mentioned the brand of windshield but, the GM OEM lists for about $500 and at "Trade Net" is around half of that. Interesting, huh. I even checked it on Parts Direct. They do not ship glass but do supply the pricing . Comes out to almost the same.
So, something like $500 to install (including materials and the "membrane").

I did see that the GM windshield was less expensive when I was calling around, but impossible to get the same day. It's a bit strange when "aftermarket parts" are more expensive than OEM....
Here is a copy of the bill and the part numbers....I don't know Jack about window prices or window part numbers but maybe someone can make heads or tales out of it....perhaps someone that was or is an installer.....

has GM printed on it and ordered from dealer. It also says crimanex. I told them I wanted a ppg and they ordered one. They say it'll take about a week and a half because it comes from USA. They sealed up the leak in the meantime in case it rains and they're going to replace the under pad on the passenger side carpet because it got soaked and they're afraid it will go moldy. Thanks to all for your help and suggestions. It's been very frustrating and I hope the PPG will solve everything. You guys are GREAT!........Robbob

robbob, it does look like you just had a bad experience with finding a proper fitting windshield. At the shop i worked at i encountered this problem often, and not with just windshield but with side windows and the rear backglass (variety of vehicles).Often i would go mobile to dealership bodyshops and install their OEM glass, only to have to redo it due to poor fit. One year, the glass company i was working for got in hot water for scamming the insurance company and we were penalized for a year. The company tried to stay afloat by buying crates of crappy windshields made in china? BOY, the flaws in those windshields were amazing! Anyways, its not always the installers fault. Sometimes we would dry fit the glass to see if there might be any problems and then when we go to finally install...we notice the curvature off or scratches/flaws only seen in certain light.

I got my first real chip in my windshield yesterday....I'm betting that this week when we have some cold weather moving back in that it will crack the whole windshield which would sort of suck......I'm real leery of that membrane thing.....
Are you guys saying the PPG fits better? maybe a new windshield would solve the noise I am getting while on the highway

My PPG windshield has stood up to a fair amount of highway driving and small rock hits with no noticeable decrease in clarity. I drive on the highway every day.
So to summarize, the PPG doesn't necessarily fit better, but it certainly is a better product overall than the Crinamex. Consider the Crinamex to be a great starter windshield until one can get a good one...

crinamex is a mexican made windshield. As far as autoglass installers are/were concerned, crimamex =crap. Whenever we were told to install the cheapest windshield possible, it was a crinamex . Very often we would inspect it and reject it for too many flaws suchs as: glass distortion, flaws in the laminate, scuff marks during shipping and bad shape/curvature. I'm kinda curious as to finding out some more info on the new windshields being installed on the 2009 toyota corolla...they are a 5 layer windshield, apparently they help to cut down on interior noise levels.
