GM looking for Non-GM calibrations
A new TSB posted on 1/25/08 for 07-08 diesel trucks, states that the dealer will now have the ability to check the last 10 flash programming events. Dealers are to record each CVN (calibration verification number) and check those numbers in the GM data base to verify that these are GM calibrations. If they are not GM calibrations then the dealer is to "remind" the customer that "Engine concerns on vehicles with non-GM calibrations are not covered by warranty". It looks like the diesels are the first to have this 10 event history, but I am sure the other vehicles will soon follow. I know most of the aftermarket vendors state GM can't deny warranty on vehicles with their programs, but GM states to the dealers that they can. As a dealership manager, I neither endorse or disapprove of this policy, I just follow the rules that are given to me. As an automotive enthusiast I like a lot of the mods available out there, and could care less what someone does to their vehicle, as long as they don't run into me with it.

Out here in Kalifornia we have been advised by GM (through our Area Vehicle Managers) that GM can, and will, continue to deny warranty assistance in failures attributed to non GM programming and non-GM approved performance enhancements. This TSB is just the latest to reinforce that.

Does GM sell program enhancements and tunes similar to other vendors? If not could this be an oppurtunity for select vendors to show GM what kind of increases their work could provide and sell the codes as "GM Performance Upgrades" this way the enthusiast can have more fun and not worry about warranty issues???

GM is not alone...a Mitsubishi rep was interviewed at the local drag strip on a weekly "grudge night"...he was copying down VIN numbers in people's windshields, and logging them in a local dealer's database.
it seems Ford's old "race on Sunday, sell on Monday" theme has a new twist amoung Mitsubishi owners
"race on wednesday, have gearbox repaired under warranty on thursday"
these cars would show up at the dealer for gear box issues, and more often then not, these issues came in on....Thursdays...the day after the local "grudge race" night.
car's vin gets entered in to the computer, and there is a "note" regarding the car's participation in a racing event....
I to am neither FOR or AGAINST.
Modify...at your own risk...

Best warranty in the business was Hummer on the old H1. You could beat the living hell out of the truck and they'd fix it no matter what. I had a friend who broke the geared hubs every other weekend and they'd keep replacing them for free.

word to the wise, cover vins and remove licence plates when racing and entering car shows. i add car shows beacuse back in the 5.0 mustang days people would enter there cobras in show the they would be stolen with in a month. that sucks so cover it up and remove the plates.

Hey Chev Mgr?
I need to have my 08 looked at for possible updates. Mid 15MPG around town with no hot rod lead foot is insane. Any suggestions? ( correct air in tires, no warming up, no ac on, etc etc etc to answer any of your pre questions )

The dealer still must prove the mod caused the problem. They can't just void the whole warranty.

That may be true but what are you going to do if they say NO? You will have to fight it in court and that will cost as much or more than the repair may. Either way you lose and they know it.
