To start with Welcome
1. the way the key works is: you turn it to start and immediately let go of it. The starter will crank until it starts or times out.
2. So it does start?
3. It is really a bad idea to use your email as a screen name. Send a PM to 843de (the admin) to change it.

I only did this 3 times - it will crank till you actually take the key out of the ignition. It will start after it sits for half hour or so. It won't time out -seems like it wants to start. And thanks for the user name thing

Welcome to the site, how old is the battery? It could be getting on and starting to exit stave left!
It could also be loose ground wires, you'll find the just down to the right of the oil filter cap, the other end goes to the rad cradle on the engine side behind the drivers head light

Strange! I think there is a relay involved, maybe needs replacing.
I'll try to look into the wiring.
I tried, but it turns out my old Mitchell won't run on Windows 10.
However, I put "hhr wiring diagram" into GoOgle and I got a page full of wiring diagrams.
WOW! check this link out. http://carwiringdiagram.net
