Cooling fan operation

Can anyone tell me what temp the cooling fan is supposed to come on at? Mine seems to run almost continuosly. 2009 SS Auto with GMTU. Watching the digital temp, it runs between 190 and 198. Fan seems to always be on when I am stopped, even with the A/C off. I can let it run at idle and it does not turn off, even after a run on the highway with outside temps around 80. Is this normal?

Don't know the answer for sure but your temps look good and I don't really see a problem with it always running. I've never paid attention to whether or not mine is always running. The under hood temps on these engines is very high and perhaps part of the GMTU program is to keep the fan always on.

With the heat being high this summer, that is probably not helping. Also, do you have the A/C on, because if you do, I have noticed that being some thing else as well.

Actually, Michelle answered my question. Thanks Michelle!

My resources have informed me that your vehicle with the 2.0 turbo engine has the fan that will run all the time. The fan speed is controlled at between 10% and 94% (high speed) so the speed will vary but it may never shut off completely. This is different than the non- turbo engine which will actually turn off at times.

OH NO! Say its not true!
I 've been telling folks on this site that my fan never comes on except with the AC on.
Now you're telling me it actually is running the entire time? Well mine must be "on" at that lower percent of speed cuz I don't hear it.
Holy-----. I guess I'll go take a look.

TO those folks that I told my fan never runs.... "I Apoligize"

Just in case there is any confusion, the A/C is also on in "Defrost" mode regardless if the little light is on or not.

Good point spozo
Also the ac is on If the recirc air is selected.
And the ac light is off.
I found this one out after turning the ac button off on my ss and said wow this recirc air on these cars works great keeping the cold air in.
A few minutes later I confirmed tje ac pump was still running .
Checked the owners manual and it also confirmed ac was on with light off
And recirc selected.
As far as the fan speed I assumed there was a high and low did not realize it could very.

You might not even hear it if it is operating at 10% speed....

..... Waiting to see if someone posts a question asking if the speed can be overridden so that the fan runs at 100% to help pull the car through the air faster - sorta like a turbo fan thing.............. Over to you Bigjacksauto ;-)
