HHR SS Intermediate steering shaft

I have a bit of play in the steering shaft of my recently purchased SS 5spd. On my 2007 LT i was able to source an OEM GM shaft and it quieted things down a lot. unfortunately the SS has a different part number that is no longer offered by GM anywhere i've looked. Rock Auto has some aftermarket one (Lares I think) On my other GM trucks i've used the aftermarket Borgeson unit which is superior to the OEM but they dont make one for HHR. Any suggestions? btw both control arms, links and tie rods are new. Any advise or sourcing would be great. thanks!

Just to confirm you installed GM control arms?
I haven’t been able to source an intermediate steering shaft for SS , yet!

The item in the RockAuto listing is for LS/LT and will not fit the SS.

Yes OEM control arms from rock auto.. front end all tight. just steering clunk. Maybe the steering column too?

The clunk does not affect efficiency just annoying to some people. I just ignored mine for 300,000 miles.

Sometimes the clunk is the slip shaft, some white lithium grease will help that, other times it the ujoints clunking, I don’t know of any company that makes replacement ujoints, they are just smaller versions of a drive shaft cross. Perhaps a drive shaft repair shop has a lead in them. My guys just closed up and retired after 52 years

I wonder if the u-joint is the same as the LS/LT?

I thought about that, but they are staked into place, so they might get damaged pressing them apart.

I dont understand why the part numbers are different? you would think an LT and a SS would be the same as they share so many parts.

Yes but the FE5 (SS) has a different eps motor, different steering rack, and a bunch of other ‘08 to ‘10 SS only parts. I wonder if Borgenson has those size u joints, available. Assuming that’s the clunk , you need to investigate , maybe call them
