SS Balljoint stub diameter

This is a Moog K80567 ball joint for an LS FE1/ LT FE1 and FE3 HHR, note the calliper measurement in metric of 19.9 mm. Too small for the SS FE5. Our moderator RJ will post a photo of his SS LCA and the ball joint stub diameter.

This is the FE5 ball joint stud for the SS, brand new, pre-installed on a new lower control arm. 20.5 mm.

Awesome .6 mm difference, so we wanted to show the difference in photos to help you avoid making the mistake of installing the Moogs in your SS

"Yeah. but it fits. They wouldn't sell it if it didn't fit."
I seem to remember that was some jerks argument when we tried to convince him to just look at it.

Can confirm. Also, if it has a grease fitting, it ain't an SS ball joint.

Thanks for your confirmation of the SS ball joints, and they are only available as a full lower control arm .
GM part numbers are in our common part number thread.

Someone on Facebook was troubled by a noisy SS front end. When he mentioned the grease fittings on his ball joints, the problem became obvious, right?

Interesting development, OTTP now lists a 20.5mm ball joint for Cobalt and HHR SS LNF’s, “expected in stock middle of August 2022.

Wish I had found this before installing those Moog ball joints. Been scratching my head over why my wheels had to much sloppiness to them after install. I don’t have an SS, I have an 07 LS 2.4 and it suffers from the exact same problem: Moog stud diameter too small. I will get a measurement when I remove/replace them but I suspect the numbers are what you all are seeing as well.

Part of me wants to experiment with slipping a thin-walled steel tube over the stud to shim the void and allow for greater clamping pressure …. But part of me also wants to live. Guess I’ll be buying Genuine GM LCA’s. So much for saving a few bucks.
