Mobil 1/ stock filter. There have been good deals on Mobil 1($20-21 for 5 qt) and it is the factory fill. Use what makes you feel best, we are splitting hairs at this level.

Just be sure whatever oil that you use meets the requirements of the owners manual regarding the viscosity and applicable GM specification. My SS requires the 5W-30 Mobil 1 or equivalent which I purchase at Walmart for $21 on a 5 gallon container. The oil filter cartridge is cheap enough at Chevy for $4.95. The filters are also available at Walmart and other automotive stores. So far I have only changed the oil once at home, the first change was done at the dealership. I am changing it at 5000 mile intervals.

I use M-1 & stock AC Delco filters...I get my filters at the auto parts for $4.99 with O-ring.
Mine doesn't require Syn oil, but I do..

This oil meets the GM 4718M standard. I am use to using Amsoil in my Harley and other vehicles. I am also a prefered customer via Harley Forum and get a price break and it is delivered to my front door.
Also ordered Lisle (part#14700)oil filter socket from Amazon for 6 bucks

I've been using M1 for the 4 1/2 years I've had my '06 HHR. After 74000 mile no issues.

Amsoil in everything for me. Of coarse I'm a dealer as well.

I just wish K&P would come out with a filter for it.

I have been running them on my bikes. My buddy out in NY http://www.valueteck.com/page2.html sells them.

Here's what you have a traditional canister filter

magnetic prefilter, high flow, great micron ratings that are absolute unlike paper filters.

Yes I know of them, I thought you were referring to your HHR,

BTW: it would be a good idea to get a good magnetic drain plug, to help on "break-in" ... That's when metals scrub-in the most..
