Disable TPMS

I'm putting on aftermarket wheels in the spring. I can do without TP monitoring, can this system be disabled? I dont know if I could handle looking at that warning light on my dash all summer.

Good luck im not real sure but I dont think so. Ive thought about doing that and just taking out the bulb that lights it up, but thinking it might make an audible alarm then like an older car I had. Took the bulb out of the cluster for a warning light and then every time I started the car it would beep constantly for like 5 minutes. Good luck let me know if you figure it out.

GM has neither provided a method for users to disable this, nor have they indicated they can/will do it for you. The sensors aren't required by law, and so there is no legitimate reason not do offer us this option... especially in light of the fact that they have had so much trouble with the TPMS's themselves (I've had 3 replaced... on a total of 2 wheels, and still have "warnings" pop up once a month or so... that magically disappear after I don't add any air to the already properly inflated tire).
BTW, you _can_ install TPMS's on many aftermarket wheels (though not all), which would resolve your specific concern).

Not until 2009 MY, IIRC. Looking for the fedreg now.
edit: haven't found the fedreg yet (lots and lots of proposed regs, public review notes, etc, going back to 2002... but not the actual reg). However, lots of googlenoise seems to indicate the required implementation year was 2008, not 2009 as I previously indicated.

I can relate to tape J W only I used to find a cool looking decal to use instead. I hope the Feds aren't in control of TP monitoring tooo, though it wouldn't surprise me. Let me know what you find out XXL, my HHR is an 09. Thanks to all for your input.

TPMS was federally mandated by the Tread Act. The phase-in schedule was:
20% compliance for Model Year 2006
70% compliance for Model Year 2007 (9/1/06)
100% compliance for Model Year 2008 (9/1/07)

Probably mandated to improve safety and fuel economy. You convinced me to add sensors to new wheels. I'm even thinking now that this system may need to be functional to pass an annual inspection. Especially in NYS. Thanks.
