They can also turn just about any new tire into a whitewall!

Well...I have to buy a new set of tires because I'm moving from a 17" wheel to a 16" wheel, so I'm breaking my Michelin tradition and going to put Goodyear Triple Treads on Car 11. Anyway I asked the Diamond Back folks what it will cost to make them whitewalls and they said $130 per tire. (Price varies by tire.) I want to do this...but...a little expensive with buying new wheels and tires too. So I'm going to pass...BUT...I wanted everyone to know what's available and that you can get just about any tire out there turned into a nice Whitewall.

 

These folks whitewalled the Yokohama Avid radials that Hharry wears. They grind off all the lettering/numbers and vulcanize a liner and whitewall (redline, goldline, whatever) to the sidewall. This voids the manufacturer's warranty but if you want 'that look'...

A word of caution: when running these wide-whites on modern steel-belted radials you need to maintain air pressure toward the upper end of the acceptable range; at least 34 or 35 psi. If not, the added flex in the sidewall will cause cracking in the whitewall - unfortunately I learned this the hard way.

 

had the same prob in the past with ww..2 seasons(winter stored)on an s10 bagger..im sure all the hoppin didnt help..I remember along time ago they use to have a "fake" whitewall..like a trim ring for tires..I remember using them for frisbies when I was a kid...

 

Based on research I've done, this is a very common occurrence if you DON'T keep the tires well inflated. THANKS for posting! :twothumbs

Those you've described were "Porta-Walls" I added them to my Black '58 Caddy...
Then can still be bought. I think thru Coker, or JC Whitney.. Must use inner tubes IIRC ?
& NEVER scrub a curb, learned that the hard way..

Even in very small sizes.. Maybe my riding mower would look cool with some WWW's.. Now you have me thinking (which generally costs me $$)....

 

Further research on the Net yielded the following: White Walls separate when pressed into prolong high speed travel. OUCH.

 

Interesting...I know radials do have more sidewall flex than bias ply tires did.. Never heard about that..& thru the years have had ww tires & run from Fla to Pa. (straight run).. Never any issues as this..

So can portawalls be used with radials or not? I have read some sites that suggest not doing that, but the one that was just linked above says "Larger radials with a 75 profile seem to work fairly well, but we do not recommend trying them on many of today's popular 60 profiles and smaller. For radials, we suggest the narrower widths, so they won't extend beyond the radius of the sidewall."
