Stock Steelies size for snow tires

My name is Brian and i've been lurking for a while now. Well, i lurk no more...i just bought an 06 LT, Black, tan interior, 5-speed, 34k miles out of Ithaca, NY.

Living up in "Lake Effect" i need snow tires. The HHR has the nice 17 inch ( i believe) alloys and i would like to find steel rims to mount the snow tires on but i don't know what size rim i need. Someone had mentioned in the search i did they used stock Cobalt wheels. Can anyone help me out? thank you.

Brian

Standard 16" LS type wheels seem to be right for this. (probably the same as on some Cobalts... careful some Cobalts had 4 lug wheels) If you get snow tires that have the same overall diameter as what you have now the speedometer will read correctly.

Welcome to the forum.

Don't use wheels off Cobalt's from 2005-most were 4 lug (even the alloys) and only 15"...

the stock 16" steelies come with 215/55/16 tires. However when I got snows, I went one size smaller at 205/55/16. Narrower tires are better cutting through snow, and they are a bit cheaper. Speedo isnt off noticeably.

Prod, Its funny how things turn out. Before I read your reply i was eyeing a set of 4 Goodyear Winterforce 205/55-16 with 1 winter on them ( guy said less than 1500 miles on them) on Craigslist for $225. So after reading your reply i called the guy and went and scooped them up for $200! SCORE! they are like brand new. Now all i need are 4 16" steelies to put them on. thanks for the help.

Try a wrecker for wheels. There should be a good number of them around, as they are also on a few other GM cars. The bolt pattern is 5x110, with a 41-42mm offset.

As I followed up on a previous post, I found of cast wheels off a Malibu. I found a pair of new looking 225/60/16 studded snows off Craig's list for $75. The speedo is off 3 mph but I use my GPS for accuracy anyway. Lots of cameras here. They clear everything OK on the front. I installed a pair of the same size of "straight treads" on the rear. They are pretty close to the inner fenders. I will have to see how much Iowa slush plies up in there, some concern.
